Artist Ray Beatty
Currently, I’m teaching watercolor painting in six different retirement communities here
in Tucson.   Classes range in size from three or four students up to as many as twelve or
thirteen students.   The main issue in teaching both beginners and intermediate painters, is
to provide a comfortable painting experience, with no pressure, and to provide a comfortable
atmosphere in which to enjoy the drawing and painting experience.   I began teaching about 15
years ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of helping others to learn and enjoy
the experience of painting in watercolor.
Having taken up serious watercolor painting in the mid 70’s, I began with instruction from
a private instructor in painting dry brush water colors.   I studied architecture during my
first two years in college, and then switched over to Fine Art in my Junior year.   My intent
was to enter the field

of commercial art, and in doing so I had a career that lasted about 40
years, working as an art director in advertising agencies, and as a working illustrator, designing
and painting mainly for the field of print media in the industrial, agricultural, and chemical
fields.   This not only exposed me to all kinds of advertising, but to the printing industry as well
and gave me the skills to deal with a variety to printing operations.
During my service in the Navy, I accepted Christ as my Savior, but it wasn’t until I got into College after my Military service that I discovered my calling as an illustrator.   Since that time it
has been my goal to be an illustrator and to concentrate on illustrating a variety of subjects either in
the Bible or related to the Bible.   My studies in college gave me the basic tools along with a couple
of professors who believed I had the talent to take on a career as an illustrator.   As in most fields
it took a few years to broaden and develop my skills as such, and now I enjoy the freedom of
doing what I’ve longed to do for many years.
While I do paint in a fairly realistic style, I do enjoy the wide variety of subject matter
available in the great Southwestern United States.   The subject matter is virtually endless, and of
course I continue my work illustrating stories from the Bible and related subjects.
