![]() "Purple Jack's"   Background:
"Purple Jack" Bybee grew up in the wonderfully scenic
Western Cape of South Africa.   For years he followed the internationally
renown Impressionist,
David Botha, around the often
rain-swept, oak-lined streets and vineyards of their hometown
of Paarl, South Africa.
Media:       Bybee works in what he calls the "the morning's medium of the moment" which can easily be one of the media he has mastered, that is, pen-'n-ink, oil, pastel or acrylic. From time-to-time he creates in water-colour, but this is not often.
Exhibits:

Bybee's art has sold into international
collections in Italy and Spain.   He has held
two one-man exhibits and joined the
Tucson Open Studio Tour in November,
2006.   He exhibited at Pima College, West Campus, in 2005.
Style:

Having studied David Botha and the
French Impressionists extensively, as in writing, Bybee is developing his 'voice';
his style.   But more importantly, the most common comment about this South-West
Impressionist is: "…oooh! Your colours… your colours!"
When Bybee works in oil and pastel the
result is often an impressionist or abstract-impressionist image.   When switching to
pen-'n-ink the exactitude of this medium allows for work in detail such as botanical
illustration and other smaller works.

Commissions:       Bybee is commissionable, but, adds Bybee "within certain parameters."   For oils and pastels, commissions start at $1,700, with a third down to commence creating.   Subject matter is limited to Nature and still life images.   "A word of caution. I tend to take my time.   I need to 'stew' on the image, try different techniques, garner ideas.   I only complete a commission when I am satisfied with the image.   With a recent commission I found the need to do four studies before I felt I was satisfied with the end result."
Art of the Future:       Bybee is still focused on abstract expressionism, but the technical, the left hemisphere "just won't allow it out ...yet." What is most appealing for Bybee is the accuracy obtained with traditional pen and ink.   He is exploring the use of the pen plus many of the different coloured inks in different washes or combined with gouache. "In the mean time," says Bybee, "it's art as usual, on with the show.   When I feel spirit moving, I create!" "The biggest art-wise thrill I get, is act of creating.   The second biggest thrill is seeing that creation, my work, hanging in someone's home.   I hope my work, will soon be hanging in your home."
